During a recent chat session, I was informed about the process of branding. As a new writer to the online market, and apparently having to (at present) market myself, I thought it might be a good exercise to go ahead and answer these questions to the best of my ability about myself as a business of writing.
If you have anything to say about me as a writer, so far, gentle reader, please be so kind as to let me know. I would be very, very, very interested to know if I have succeeded at all in getting my name favorably out in the open.
Deciding On Your Brand
To decide on your brand, answer the following questions:
- How do you want to be known? What words do you want people to associate with you? I want to be known as a strange, unpredictable author, perhaps a little quirky, certainly eccentric. I don't want to be type-cast, or get stuck writing the same thing over and over. Authors who come to mind are such as Brian Jacques, a man very successful at marketing what, three stories? again and again. I really liked Redwall, but when I red the same story over and over, it determined me that I do not want to do that.
- What are your goals for the next 3 years? What words are associated with that? I would like to get published by an respectable publisher again. It's awesome that I can self-publish some of my works, but I really enjoyed getting published by eTreasures as well and the validation to my work that brought me. It was a family gathering when I found out I would be able to publish my first novel, and it was absolutely awesome.
- Will your books be in a particular genre? (Can't turn off the bold for some reason)...Yes, like Faulkner in Yawnawpatawpha County, I intend (though I might deviate from this for a few shorter works here and there) to set almost all of my novels in my great big world of Trithofar, or its affiliated realms, including Geibos or the Vartemaic Worlds.
- Who do you admire and want to emulate in writing and also as a brand? Find their websites and keep screenprints of what you like and don’t like. Use them as a model (but obviously no plagiarism!) There are several writers I want to emulate. As you can see above, I like Faulkner, or rather I like the idea of Faulkner, who broke free of stylistic restrictions and was able to do exactly what he wanted with his little piece of Fictiocana (or whatever the proper word is). I like the seemingly infinite variety of Ray Bradbury, and I like the attention to details in Patrick Rothfuss. I love the fearless nature of Richard Adams (who wrote Watership Down); he doesn't pull punches.
- If you have a website already, enter it into Google Keyword tool. Are you happy with the keywords associated with your site? Do you need to change your focus? Hmmm. Gonna have to try that one.
- What images do you want associated with you and your brand? Probably maps and drawings and any illustrations my friends will help me create or create with me. I'm not as good a visual artist as a descriptive one. I'd like to think I'll get better, but probably not before I wish to publish.
